Standards of Psychotherapy Practice
What separates API from every other continuing education provider. Our standards are not aspirational slogans—they are the operational foundation of everything we teach.
Standard One
Evidence-Based Foundation
Clinical education should be built on what we know works—not on what we've always done.
DSM-5-TR Grounded
Every diagnostic framework, case conceptualization, and clinical example in our curriculum is grounded in the current DSM-5-TR. We do not teach outdated nosologies or theoretical relics.
Neuroscience-Informed
Our courses integrate current neuroscience research into clinical application. Understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of disorders translates directly into more effective treatment planning.
Research-Driven Curriculum
Course content is built from peer-reviewed literature, meta-analyses, and clinical outcome data. We teach what the evidence supports, not what tradition preserves.
Standard Two
Cultural Integration
API was founded at the intersection of Western clinical science and the philosophical traditions of Persian psychology. This is not a marketing angle—it is a methodological commitment.
We believe that effective psychotherapy must be culturally informed. Our curriculum integrates multicultural competency not as an add-on module, but as a thread woven through every course, clinical example, and case study.
Persian Psychology Tradition
Drawing from centuries of philosophical inquiry into the human condition, integrating wisdom traditions with modern clinical frameworks.
Multicultural Competency
Cultural awareness built into every clinical example, not siloed into a standalone diversity module.
Diverse Faculty Perspectives
Our faculty brings varied cultural backgrounds and clinical orientations, ensuring training reflects the diversity of real-world practice.
Standard Three
Ethics & ACA Alignment
API's curriculum is built in alignment with the American Counseling Association's ethical standards—not as compliance theater, but as a core operating principle.
ACA Ethical Foundations
Integrated across all courses and training materials
Autonomy and respect for client self-determination
Nonmaleficence in all clinical interventions
Beneficence grounded in evidence-based practice
Justice and equitable access to quality care
Fidelity to the therapeutic relationship
Veracity in clinical communication and documentation
Standard Four
Real-World Application Model
Every concept we teach is tied to one question: “What does this mean in session?”
Clinical Translation Layer
From theory to therapeutic intervention
In session: Recognize when a client's nervous system shifts from ventral vagal (safe) to dorsal vagal (shutdown) mid-session, and use co-regulation techniques to restore the therapeutic window.
In session: Identify attachment-driven transference patterns in the first three sessions and adjust your therapeutic stance to provide corrective relational experience.
In session: Distinguish between PTSD and BPD presentations in intake using structured clinical interview techniques, avoiding the diagnostic conflation that leads to mistreatment.
This model is applied across all API courses, ensuring that every hour of CE credit earned translates into measurable clinical competency.
